🔄 Migration Guide - How to Upgrade Your Vault Security
⚠️ Important: To get full security benefits, you need to create a new vault
Your existing vault will continue working, but it still uses the old 10,000 iterations. To get the full 1,000,000 iteration protection, follow these steps:
Step-by-Step Migration Process
1. Export Your Current Passwords 📤
- Open CyberVault v4.2.0 or earlier
- Go to File > Export (or your export feature)
- Save your passwords to a secure location (CSV or backup file)
- Keep this file safe - you'll need it in step 4
2. Update to CyberVault v4.3.0 ⬆️
- Download and install CyberVault v4.3.0
- Don't open it yet - proceed to step 3 first
3. Delete Old Vault Files 🗑️
- Close CyberVault completely
- Press
Windows + R, type%AppData%and press Enter - Navigate to
Roaming\CyberVault - Delete everything in the CyberVault folder
- This removes your old, less-secure vault files
4. Create New Secure Vault 🔐
- Launch CyberVault v4.3.0
- Create a new account with your master password
- This creates a new vault with 1,000,000 iteration security
5. Import Your Passwords 📥
- Use File > Import (or your import feature)
- Import the passwords from the file you saved in step 1
- Your passwords are now protected with enhanced security!
6. Clean Up 🧹
- Securely delete the exported password file
- Empty your Recycle Bin
- Your migration is complete!
🛡️ Security Benefits After Migration
- 100x stronger protection against brute force attacks
- Modern encryption standards (2025+ compliant)
- Memory security improvements
- Future-proof protection
⚠️ Migration Warnings
- Backup First: Always export your passwords before deleting vault files
- Secure the Export: The exported file contains unencrypted passwords - handle carefully
- No Rush: Take your time and follow each step carefully
- Test Import: Verify all passwords imported correctly before deleting the export file
🤔 Alternative: Keep Old Vault (Not Recommended)
If you prefer not to migrate immediately:
- Your old vault will continue working with 10,000 iterations
- You'll miss out on the enhanced security benefits
- New passwords added will still use old security level
- Recommendation: Migrate when convenient for maximum protection
📊 Security Impact
| Security Aspect | v4.2.0 | v4.3.0 | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| PBKDF2 Iterations | 10,000 | 1,000,000 | 100x stronger |
| Brute Force Resistance | ~100K attempts/sec | ~1K attempts/sec | 100x slower attacks |
| Memory Security | Basic clearing | Secure API clearing | Malware resistant |
| Industry Standards | 2015 level | 2025+ level | Modern compliance |
⚠️ Important Information
Performance Impact
- Startup Time: Opening CyberVault now takes 1-2 seconds longer due to enhanced security
- One-Time Cost: Only affects initial app unlock, not individual password access
- Worth the Wait: Short delay provides massive security improvement
⚠️ Required Migration for Enhanced Security
- Manual Re-encryption Required: To benefit from the enhanced security, you must create a new vault
- Old Vaults: Existing vaults will continue to work but use the old 10,000 iterations (less secure)
- Recommended Action: Export your passwords, delete old vault, and create new vault for maximum protection
User Experience
- Minimal Impact: Only the initial unlock is affected
- Security Indicator: The slight delay actually indicates your passwords are well-protected
- Peace of Mind: Your sensitive data is now protected against modern attack methods
🛡️ Why This Update Matters
Modern Threats Require Modern Protection
- GPU Attacks: Modern graphics cards can crack weak encryption much faster
- Cloud Computing: Attackers can rent powerful hardware to break passwords
- Hardware Evolution: What was secure in 2015 is vulnerable in 2025
Industry-Leading Security
- Exceeds Competitors: Now matches or exceeds security of premium password managers
- Expert Recommended: Meets current cybersecurity expert recommendations
- Enterprise Ready: Suitable for business and high-security environments
Real-World Protection
If someone steals your encrypted CyberVault file:
- Before v4.3.0: Could potentially crack simple passwords in hours/days
- After v4.3.0: Would need months/years even with powerful hardware
🔧 Technical Details
Cryptographic Specifications
- Algorithm: AES-256-CBC with PKCS7 padding (unchanged)
- Key Derivation: PBKDF2-SHA256 with 1,000,000 iterations (upgraded)
